Cancer is the second biggest killer in the UK. Whilst the prognosis for many forms of cancer is good if diagnosed early, a late diagnosis can lead to a progression in symptoms and the cancer becoming more advanced before it is discovered. This can mean a worse prognosis, and even an earlier death.
Exposure to carcinogens
Exposure to asbestos has been demonstrated to cause damage to the lungs. This damage can lead to mesothelioma (a cancer affecting the lining of the lung and abdomen). The use of asbestos is now banned the in the UK but this ban has come too late for many ship-builders and constructions workers that have already been exposed.
Several chemicals with links to bladder cancer have been banned in the UK. People working in rubber production, gas works, dye factories and other chemical industries may have been exposed to these chemical prior to the ban.
Clinical negligence relating to cancer
You may suspect that you have suffered a delay in diagnosing cancer, as a result of your doctor failing to refer you for specialist advice or tests. Or you may consider that there was a negligent delay in providing appropriate treatment to you once the diagnosis had been made. Alternatively, you may have been diagnosed wrongly with cancer for example by being given wrong test results.
